Do I have to come in to place an order?
No. Most products are ordered self-serve online — upload your file, pick specs, we print. Custom jobs (framing, exhibits, fine art consultations) work best with a call or visit. We're at 2700 Rydin Rd, Richmond.
How fast can you turn around a rush job?
Signs and basic prints: same-day (as fast as 1 hour). Custom framing: 5–10 business days. Call us with your deadline — 510-526-2150 — we'll tell you honestly what's possible.
Do you ship outside the Bay Area?
Yes. Most products ship anywhere in the U.S. via UPS/FedEx. Large signs and framed work are best picked up locally or arranged via white-glove delivery.
What file formats do you accept?
Print-ready PDFs preferred. We also accept TIFF, JPEG, PSD, AI, INDD. See the File Prep Guide on our Policies page for full specs. In-house design support available if your file isn't ready.
Will I see a proof before you print?
Always. Every order — self-serve or custom — gets a digital proof before we go to press. No surprises on the finished piece.
Can you reproduce my original artwork?
Yes — it's a specialty. We offer DSLR and scan-back capture for originals up to 24×30, plus archival giclée reproduction on Hahnemühle papers. Call us to discuss your piece.

Can you print my sign today?
For standard yard signs and banners, often yes — call first to confirm capacity (510-526-2150). We've delivered same-day as fast as 1 hour. Rush fees apply.
What resolution does my file need?
For large-format, we recommend 150 DPI at final print size. Below 100 DPI will look pixelated. See our File Prep Guide for full specs.
Are the signs weatherproof?
Yes for outdoor substrates — corrugated plastic, vinyl banners, gatorboard. UV-stable inks last 1–3 years outdoors. Lamination extends that further.
Do you do sign installation?
For trade-show backdrops and storefront vinyl, we refer you to local install partners. Yard signs, A-frames, and pop-ups don't require professional installation.

Can I bring original artwork for reproduction?
Yes — this is a specialty. We capture originals via scan-back (up to 24×30) or DSLR (larger). Color-managed workflow ensures the print matches the source work.
Do you do limited editions with COAs?
Yes. We help artists manage numbered editions, provide COA templates, and keep edition records. Built for serious working artists who exhibit and sell.
How do you match color from screen to print?
G7-calibrated workflow with ICC profiles per paper type. We can also do hard proofs for critical work. Bring your monitor profile or ask about our soft-proof setup.
Giclée vs photographic prints — which should I choose?
Giclée: archival pigment on art paper, 200+ yr lightfastness, museum-grade. Photographic: sharper for photo work, similar to C-print quality, slightly shorter archival life. Both are excellent — it depends on the output and your intended market.

Framing FAQ

Before you bring it in.

Can I order a frame without coming in?
For standard-size mats, yes — sold through the catalog. For anything custom (conservation framing, unusual sizes, shadow boxes, float mounting), we strongly recommend an in-store consultation with your piece.
What does "conservation framing" mean?
All materials touching the artwork are acid-free and chemically stable. UV-protective glazing blocks 99% of UV light. Archival hinges that don't bleed. The framing protects the piece for decades, not damages it.
Can you frame work I didn't print at Avant?
Absolutely. We frame anything — originals, photos from elsewhere, family heirlooms, certificates, jerseys, memorabilia. You don't need to print with us to frame with us.
Do you ship framed work?
Yes — we crate framed pieces for safe shipping. Acrylic-glazed frames are especially ship-friendly. For show deliveries, we coordinate with your shipper or recommend a local fine-art handler.

Can I set up a house account for recurring orders?
Yes. If you're reordering the same letterhead, cards, or envelopes regularly, we keep your specs on file and offer quantity discounts. Call us to set one up.
What paper stocks do you offer?
For business printing: 14pt and 16pt cover stock, 70lb and 100lb text stock, soft-touch matte. Premium finishes (foil, letterpress, spot UV) available on select products.
How fast is turnaround on business cards?
Standard: 3–5 business days after proof approval. Rush options available — call us with your deadline.
Do you offer EDDM-ready postcards?
Yes. We print EDDM (Every Door Direct Mail) ready postcards at 6×11 and other qualifying sizes. We can also help you with the mailing coordination.

The story

From Cantoo to Avant. Over a Decade of Fine Printing.

Avant Printing opened January 1, 2012 with one mission: make it genuinely easy to get high-quality printing without settling for less.

Before Avant, we operated as Cantoo. Many of our current clients have been with us since those days. Some for over 14 years.

Kevin manages color. He has spent decades developing an eye for density, contrast, and resolution that we would put up against any lab in the Bay Area. When a file comes in, Kevin looks at it personally. That is not a policy. That is just how we work.

Robyn runs everything else. Client communication, scheduling, rush orders, making sure your job arrives on time and exactly as you expected. He is the person who calls you when he has a question rather than guessing.

We are located just off the Central Ave exit from 80 or 580, right by the Richmond Costco and Point Isabel Dog Park. Free parking in front and at the north end of the building. Come in.

Privacy Policy

Avant Printing LLC ("Avant Printing," "we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices regarding your information.

What we collect

We collect information you provide directly: name, email address, phone number, shipping address, and any project files you upload. We also collect standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages visited) and order history for customers with accounts.

How we use it

We use your information to process and fulfill orders, send order confirmations and status updates, respond to inquiries, and improve our services. We do not sell or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.

File storage

Print files you upload are stored securely and used only to complete your order. We retain order files for 90 days after completion unless you request longer archival storage. Longer archival is available — ask us about file storage plans.

Terms of Service

By placing an order with Avant Printing LLC, you agree to these terms. Please read them before submitting your order.

Payment

Payment is required at time of order for all standard products. Custom jobs (framing, trade-show displays, exhibit graphics, large format runs over $500) may require a 50% deposit before production begins. House accounts with established credit terms are available by arrangement.

Proof approval

We send a digital proof for every order before going to press. Production begins only after you provide written approval. By approving a proof, you confirm the content is correct and authorize production. We are not responsible for errors (spelling, color, content) that were present in the approved proof.

Turnaround times

Standard turnaround is stated per product on our catalog. Rush turnaround is available for most products at additional cost. Turnaround begins after proof approval and full payment. Turnaround times are business days and are estimates, not guarantees.

Accuracy of files

You are responsible for providing print-ready files that meet our specifications (see File Prep Guide below). Avant Printing is not responsible for print quality issues arising from low-resolution files, incorrect color spaces, or files that don't meet our stated specifications.

File Prep Guide

Correct file preparation is the single most important factor in print quality. Following these specs ensures your job prints as expected.

Quick reference — most common settings

Format: PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 preferred · Color: CMYK · Resolution: 300 DPI at final print size (150 DPI minimum for large format) · Bleed: 0.125" on all sides · Safe zone: 0.25" from all edges

Color mode

All files must be submitted in CMYK color mode. RGB files will be converted to CMYK before printing — colors may shift during conversion, particularly bright blues, greens, and oranges. If color accuracy is critical, convert to CMYK yourself and verify colors in a soft-proof before submitting.

Resolution

  • Business cards, brochures, small format: 300 DPI at final print size
  • Posters and medium-format signs: 200–300 DPI at final print size
  • Large format banners and trade-show displays: 100–150 DPI at final print size (viewed from distance)
  • Fine art and photographic prints: 300+ DPI, provided as-captured (do not upsample)

Bleed and safe zones

All print files must include 0.125" (1/8") bleed on all four sides for any element that prints to the edge. Keep all important content (text, logos, faces) at least 0.25" (1/4") from the finished edge to account for trimming variation.

Fonts

Embed all fonts in your PDF, or convert text to outlines before exporting. Missing fonts will default to a system substitute, often changing your layout.

File formats accepted

  • PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 (preferred)
  • TIFF (for fine-art / photographic work)
  • AI (Adobe Illustrator — fonts outlined)
  • PSD (Photoshop — flattened or with layers)
  • INDD (InDesign — package with all linked files)
  • JPEG (acceptable for photos; 300 DPI minimum)

Our process

Print Approval Process

We never go to press without your sign-off. Here's how the approval process works for every order type.

Standard orders (self-serve catalog)

After you submit your order, we check your file for obvious issues (resolution, bleed, color mode). We send a digital proof by email within 1 business day. You approve or request changes. Production begins immediately after approval. Standard turnaround begins from approval — not from order submission.

Custom and large-format orders

For trade-show displays, exhibit graphics, and other large-format custom jobs, we may produce a hard proof (physical print) before the full run. Hard proofing adds 1–2 business days but is strongly recommended for projects over $500 or where exact color is critical.

Framing and custom fabrication

Framing orders are confirmed with an in-store consultation or a detailed written quote. You approve the quote (materials, construction, timeline) before we begin. Changes after fabrication has started may incur additional costs.

Our policy

Returns & Refunds

Because print products are custom-made to your specifications, we cannot accept returns for reasons of buyer's remorse or changes of mind. However, we stand behind the quality of our work.

When we'll reprint or refund

  • The print has a manufacturing defect (banding, color shift from proof, substrate damage)
  • We made an error on the order (wrong size, wrong product, wrong substrate)
  • The finished piece materially differs from the approved proof

When we won't

  • The file submitted was low-resolution, had the wrong color space, or didn't include bleed — and the issue was visible in the proof you approved
  • You approved a proof that contained the error you're now reporting
  • Custom framing orders where materials were specified and approved by you before fabrication

How to report an issue

Contact us within 5 business days of receiving your order. Email info@avantprinting.com with your order number and photos of the issue. We respond within 1 business day and will make it right if the error is on our end.
